Her work includes many years offering birth debriefing to distressed women and partners trying to understand why their baby’s birth was so far from their hoped for dreams. Sadly, many women and their partners lack any understanding of the impact that their birth choices have on the birth experience of their babies.

Modules in Detail

WEEK 1 - What do our birth statistics reveal about the birth culture?

We will explore structural issues and trends within the birth culture informed by brand new statistics released in Australia’s July 2022 Mothers and Babies Report. Birth stories will illustrate these trends.

WEEK 2 - Common Pathways to Interventions

Understand why the healthy low-risk and motivated women in front of you – your client – can nonetheless end up experiencing what is commonly called the ‘cascade of interventions’.

WEEK 3 - Pain Dynamics and the unintended consequences of epidurals

In present birth culture the seduction of the epidural is immense, however many women, and supporting practitioners, are unaware of the resulting consequences – the ‘epidural cascade’.

You will also receive links and details to an array of recommended resources throughout the course.

Rhea is a mother of three adult daughters and now five delightful grandchildren. She is a counsellor, independent childbirth educator, trainer and author, with over 40 years experience working with women and families before, during and after birth. Her special interest is in exploring the psychosocial factors that affect birth experiences. Her current counselling practice specialises in psychological birth debriefing.
